Born in Sapporo. Started ballet at the age of three under his parents (Kuniyuki Shinohara and Seiko Sahara).1973 Participated in the inaugural performance of the Noriko Kobayashi Ballet Theater. Joined the theater.1978 Received the Japan Ballet Association Performance Newcomer Award. From 1978, studied in Monaco as an artist trainee of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and worked as a guest dancer at the Reims-Nancy Ballet Company. In 1985, he became a freelancer and became a noble dancer representing Japan, embodying the standards of classical ballet as a "princely prince" in various performances and performances sponsored by the Japan Ballet Association.
1997 Special overseas trainee (as a choreographer) dispatched by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, trained at the San Francisco Ballet and the Netherlands Dance Theater. In 2001, he started the "DANCE for life" Shinohara Seiichi Ballet Recital.
In 2002, he won the Excellence Award at the 28th Tachibana Akiko Award, and in 2006, he won the Grand Prize at the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival (for the full-length DANCE for life Shinohara Seiichi Ballet Recital "Romeo and Juliet"). In 2007, he won the Outstanding Instructor Award at the Tokyo Shimbun National Dance Competition. In 2009, he won the Special Award at the 35th Tachibana Akiko Award, and in 2017, he won the Kawakami Suzuko Memorial Contemporary Dance Festival Award (for the Hokkaido branch joint work "When the Snow Melts, Then Spring Comes"), in 2018, he won the 66th Tokyo Shimbun Dance Arts Award, and in 2019, he won the 69th Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Art Encouragement Prize (Dance Category, Dancer).
In recent years, he has served as a judge at various competitions, as well as serving as numerous artistic directors, and has performed classical ballets as a director and choreographer. Many original works are also on display.

札幌市生まれ。 3歳より両親（ 篠原邦幸、 沙原聖子） の元バレエを始める。
1973年 小林紀子バレエシアター 旗揚げ公演に参加。 同シアターに入団。
1978年日本バレエ協会公演新人賞受賞。1978年から文化庁芸術家在外派遣研修員としてモナコに留学、 ランス ナンシーバレエ団にてゲストダンサーとして活躍。1979年帰国。
1985年フリーとなり、日本を代表するノーブルダンサーとして各公演や日本バレエ協会主催公演等に「王子らしい王子」としてクラシックバレエの規範を体現し活躍する。
1997年文化庁派遣特別在外研修員（振付家として）サンフランシスコバレエ団、ネザーランド ダンスシアターにて研修。2001年 「D A N C E for life」 篠原聖一バレエリサイタルをスタート。
2002年 第28回橘秋子賞、優秀賞受賞、2006年文化庁芸術祭大賞受賞（D AN C E for life篠原聖一バレエリサイタル『ロミオとジュリエット』全幕において）、2007年東京新聞主催全国舞踊コンクール優秀指導者賞受賞、2009年 35回橘秋子賞、特別賞を受賞、2017年平成29年度河上鈴子記念現代舞踊フェスティバル賞受賞（北海道支部合同作『雪が溶けて やがて春が来る頃』において）、2018年東京新聞制定第66回舞踊芸術賞受賞、2019年第69回芸術選奨文部科学大臣賞受賞（舞踊部門、舞踊家）。
近年は各コンクール審査員を務める他、数々の芸術監督も務め、演出、振付家として古典バレエを披露。また創作作品も多く出品。

4歳よりクラッシック・バレエを沢田輝雄、沢田耕司、そして小野正子に師事。14歳で中国地区バレエコンクール４位。 16歳よりニューヨークのスクール オブ アメリカン バレエに留学し、スタンリー・ウィリアムスに師事。その後、ワガノワ・スタイルをキリル マトヴィーヴ、フロアー バーをダニエル メジャから学んだ。在学中に出場したヴァルナ国際バレエ・コンクールでは、セミ・ファイナリスト。
慶應義塾大学を卒業（文学部フランス文学専攻）。在学中は藤堂眞子に師事。
2013年に穂坂バレエグループを創設。
著書に『文学的バレエ「ジゼル」のすすめ』がある。
2024年に「日本初、乗越たかおの【舞踊評論家［育成→派遣］プログラム】２期生、2025年イタリア、ゴリツィアで行われるAerowaves' Spring Forward Festival派遣に選出された。

Studied under Mitsuru Horiuchi.
Enrolled in School of American Ballet（Learn from Stanley Williams, Andrei Kramarevsky, and others.)
While a student in SAB, he performed in the Stanford City Ballet's "The Nutcracker (Balanchine version)," the SAB Workshop "Jewels" , the Aoyama Ballet Festival, and more.
After returning to Japan, he has appeared in numerous performances and stage productions, mainly those produced by Ju Horiuchi, such as the Ju Horiuchi & Gen Horiuchi Ballet Collection, as well as with the Art Ballet Naniwazu Ballet Company, NBA Ballet Company, Momoko Tani Ballet Company, Asami Maki Ballet Company, Tokyo City Ballet, Inoue Ballet Company, Noriko Kobayashi Ballet Theater, Ballet Chambre Ouest, and others.
He is the head of the Mochida Ballet Studio.
堀内充に師事。
ニューヨークのスクール・オブ・アメリカン・バレエ（SAB）に留学。故スタンリー・ウィリアムス、アンドレイ・クラマレフスキー等に師事。
在学中、スタンフォードシティバレエ「くるみ割り人形(バランシン版)」、SABワークショップ「Jewels」、青山バレエフェスティバル等に出演。
帰国後は、堀内充・堀内元Ballet Collectionなど、堀内充が手掛ける公演を中心に、アートバレエ難波津バレエ団、NBAバレエ団、谷桃子バレエ団、牧阿佐美バレエ団、東京シティバレエ団、井上バレエ団、小林紀子バレエシアター、バレエシャンブルウエスト他、多数の公演や舞台に出演している。
「持田バレエスタジオ」主宰。
